Punishment: The American Story

What is punishment and why do we punish as we do? What can we learn about politics, law, and culture in the United States by examining practices of punishment? What are the limits of punishment? The issues raised by these three questions guide this institute for history, civics, social studies, literature, and other teachers at the middle and high school level. Participants will engage with texts, classic and contemporary, in which the subject of punishment figures prominently, as well as disciplinary practices found in schools.
